Softball splits with Bobcats

LEWISTON, Maine -- Wiley Holton pitched a complete game and helped her cause offensively to lift the Colby College softball team to a 6-3 win over Bates College in NESCAC East play on Saturday.

The Bobcats took a 5-2 win over Colby in the opener.The Mules (8-16 overall, 1-7 league) and Bates (9-11, 1-5) will finish the three-game series on Sunday at noon at the Colby Baseball/Softball Complex.
 

Colby led 6-0 in the nightcap before the Bobcats scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh.

Holton (pictured) struck out six, walked two, and gave up seven hits in the victory. Colby took two runs in the second, three in the fifth inning, and one run in the sixth. Holton also had one hit, one run, and one RBI. 
 

Robin Spofford, the NESCAC's leading hitter coming into the weekend, had a pair of hits and scored twice in the nightcap. Ella Hommeyer also had hits and two runs for the Mules.

In the top of the second inning, Hommeyer led off with a double and scored on Holton's bunt single through the left side. With Holton now at third base thanks to a single by Kathleeen Mason, Paige Hartnett drove in the run.
 

Spofford led off the fifth inning with a double and Skylar Labbe walked. Spofford advanced to third on a wild pitch and Hommeyer walked to load the bases. Labbe scored the second run of the inning on a fielder's choice and Hommeyer scoed on a throwing error.

Colby's final run was in the sixth inning after Spofford reached on a fielder's choice, took second on a wild pitch, and scored on Labbe's single to right center.
 

Bates led 3-0 after two innings before the Mules scored a lone run in the third. Katie McLaughlin led off with a single, stole second base, took third on a ground, and scored on a wild pitch.

The Bobcats scored lone runs in the fourth and fifth innings. Vansesa Warsaw doubled with one out in the seventh inning and was replaced by Emily Dougherty as a pinch-runner. Dougherty moved to third on a wild pitch and later scored on a steal of home plate.
