WATERVILLE, Maine -- Katie McLaughlin had half of Colby College's hits and two scored two runs in a 3-1 non-conference victory over Thomas College on Tuesday at the Colby Baseball/Softball Complex.
The Mules (7-12 overall) received a terrific outing from Julia Saul (pictured), who won her third game of the season. She pitched a complete game, struck out three, walked none, and worked out of trouble in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Colby broke a 1-1 tie with two runs in the top of the sixth inning. The game was originally scheduled for Thomas, and the Terriers (3-13) batted last despite playing on Colby's field.
Robin Spofford went all the way to second base on an error by the Thomas first baseman. McLaughlin was credited with an RBI single to plate Spofford, but she advanced all the way to third on an error by the Terrier center fielder. Skylar Labbe followed with a sacrifice fly to left field to bring in the third run.
With one out in the bottom of the seventh, ninth-place hitter Madison Bentz doubled down the right field line for Thomas. Katie Taylor pushed Bentz to third base with an infield single. Saul stayed calm and got a pop up to third for the second out and induced a ground ball for a fielder's choice to end the game.
Colby scored a lone run in the first inning when McLaughlin had a one-out single. She stole second base and then advanced to third on a wild pitch. Ella Hommeyer singled to left field to bring in McLaughlin.
Saul gave up the lone run in the bottom of the second inning. Lexi Colpack was hit by a pitch and went all the way to third on a bunt single by Kayla Bess. Lauren Guppy also bunted for a single and picked up the RBI on Colpack's run.
Labbe and Hommeyer both had one hit and one RBI, while Spofford scored one run and had a walk.
Bess and Taylor led an eight-hit attack for Thomas with two hits apiece. Sydney LeBourveau gave up four hits in seven innings and allowed just two earned runs.
Colby is scheduled to play at Bowdoin College on Friday at 4 p.m. The Mules will play host to the Polar Bears for a doubleheader Saturday at noon.
