Men's basketball scores 124 points in win, beats UNE for tourney title

Box Score
BIDDEFORD, Maine -- There was little mystery on who would be the most valuable player of the University of New England Men's Basketball Tournament after Colby College's Dean Weiner flirted with a quadruple-double in the Mules' 124-97 victory over the host school in the championship game Saturday.

Weiner capped off his MVP weekend with 17 points on 7-for-9 shooting, 18 rebounds, eight assists, seven blocked shots, and no turnovers. He had 10 points, 11 rebounds, four blocked shots, and four steals in the season-opening win over Colby-Sawyer College on Friday.

"Dean was exceptional today and certainly impacted the game in all phases," Colby head coach Damien Strahorn said. "His defensive length, ability to finish inside, and the way he sees the floor makes him a really dynamic player."

By the numbers
* Weiner did his damage while playing just 21 minutes because of the lopsided score.

* The Mules scored 62 points in each half and shot 62 percent from the field (49-for-79). Colby was 10 points shy of tying the single-game team scoring record of 134 set by the 1994 team.

*  First-year guard Matt Hanna (pictured) made the all-tournament team after scoring 11 points. He had 14 points in the victory over Colby-Sawyer.

* Sophomore guard Sam Jefferson had a team-high 22 points on 9-for-18 shooting and blocked two shots for the Mules. First-year guard Wallace Tucker shot 8-for-12 for 18 points to go along with six assists. Senior co-captain Pat Dickert was 6-for-9 from the field, made all five of his free throws, had 17 points, six rebounds, and four assists.

* The Mules had other fine performances in the victory. Steven Daley shot 5-for-9 for 10 points, Ethan Schlager had seven points and five assists, and Tyler Williams dished five assists.

* UNE (1-2) received 22 points from Gavin Dibble, with 12 coming on free throws.

How it happened
* UNE scored 122 points in its victory over St. Joseph's (N.Y.) on Friday. The Nor'easters favor quick shots and plenty of transition. However, Colby is no slouch in a fast-paced game and the Mules dominated the boards by a 57-37 count.

"I thought our guys did a great job of understanding what it would take to win today," Strahorn said. "We were able to execute the game plan as well as I've seen since I've been back."

* The game was tied at 27-27 with 10:28 to halftime, but the Mules began to steadily pull away. Colby led 49-38 with 3:58 to go and used a 13-6 run from that point to go up 62-44 at the break.

* The Mules scored the first seven points of the second half and shot 64.9 percent from the field in the final 20 minutes.
