In the winter of 2024, Colby College announced the selection of Beaux Myers as the new mental performance coach for Colby Athletics. As a key member of the Peak Performance program, Myers works closely with athletes and coaches of all teams, as well as the rest of the Peak Performance team, in a concerted effort to elevate the experiences of Colby's student-athletes.Â
Â
Initiated in 2018 as the first of its kind at the Division III level, Colby's Peak Performance program positions the student-athlete in the center of a holistic support system comprised of strength and conditioning, sports medicine, nutrition, sports science, and sports psychology. Constant connectivity across each field provides consistent support in every area an athlete may need it. Prior to this announcement, the sports psychology component of athlete development and performance at Colby was supported by a part-time position.
Â
"We are excited to have Beaux with us as our first full-time mental performance coach," said Director of Peak Performance Dr. Anne Beethe. "This commitment to our program reinforces what we are doing here at Colby and makes our Peak Performance team more robust. Not only will Beaux be working with our student-athletes and coaches, but he will be present at practices, in the athletic training room, and in the weight room. He will help provide significantly greater reach for mental performance to help our student-athletes."
Â
A high-performance model such as Colby's Peak Performance program is more commonly seen at the professional level (NFL, NHL, MLB), within elite military special operations (Navy SEALs, Army Special Forces), as well as select Division I institutions such as Wisconsin, Nebraska, Dartmouth, and Yale. Colby's program was the first of its kind at the Division III level.
Â
"I am extremely excited about this opportunity," said Myers. "As a mental performance coach, I strive to be a resource for student-athletes' development, both in and away from their sport. Being a former Division III athlete, my own experiences led me to discover my passion for supporting and developing the mental performance of student-athletes while also pursuing my love of sport. Once I saw this opportunity at Colby, I realized this was my chance to support the development of current and future Division III student-athletes."
Â
Myers competed in golf at St. Norbert College, later returning to coach the women's team for the Green Knights. He received a master's of science in sport, exercise, and performance psychology from the University of Wisconsin, Green Bay and earned a Certified Mental Performance Consultant (CMPC) certification from the Association for Applied Sport Psychology. Myers has worked as a mental performance coach at high school, collegiate, and clinical levels.
Â
"Focusing on mental performance in sport helps athletes push past major barriers to reach full performance abilities," said Beethe. "Fear, confidence issues, and preparing for the unexpected are all spaces any athlete needs practice and exercise. They put in the time on the court, ice, field, etc., and now they have the opportunity to exercise the mental aspect as well, with an expert in the field on staff."
Â
The mental performance coach position was made possible by the support of Friends of Colby Athletics.
