BEFORE COLBY
Sophie graduated from Hanover High School, where she was a member of the volleyball and winter track teams. She has held several summer research assistant positions.
AT COLBY
Sophie is majoring in Global Studies and Latin American Studies. She is a member of the Oak Student Committee, the assistant director of the Colby Volunteer Center, and a COOT leader. Her sister, Sasha '08, also rowed for the Mules.
2016-17 season highlights: Sophie competed with the varsity 8 boat for the third straight year and sat in the third spot. She helped the Mules take 11th at the National Invitational Rowing Championships (NIRC), 10th at the New England Championships, wins over Coast Guard and UMass-Lowell in a tri-meet, and a victory at spring opener in Georgia. Sophie was on the NIRC All-Academic Team and the NESCAC Spring All-Academic Team. She earned the Faculty Prize for High Scholarly Attainment from the Global Studies Department and the The Walker Latin American Studies Senior Prize at the Colby Student Awards Ceremony. Sophie also was one of nine senior Colby athletes to be inducted into Phi Beta Kappa.
2015-2016 season highlights: Bartels competed in the first varsity boat in her junior season. She helped the Mules finish first in the home regatta, second in the Petite Final and eighth overall at the New England Championships, and 11th overall at the ECAC National Championship.
2014-2015 season highlights: Bartels competed with the first varsity boat for the majority of the year, helping the team finish second at the Lowell Regatta from the third position and fourth at the Worcester Regatta from the fourth position. Bartels finished the season by helping the Mules take second at the UNH Regatta, 10th at the New England Rowing Championship, and 12th at the ECAC National Championship.
2013-2014 season highlights: Bartels competed with the second varsity boat from the fourth position in her first season, helping the Mules take first at the Lowell Regatta and fifth at the Worcester Regatta.
