The Harold Alfond Athletics and Recreation Center

Vol. 1: A New Era of Excellence

Harold Alfond, L.H.D. '80

This center is dedicated to Harold Alfond, L.H.D. '80, business entrepreneur, founder of Dexter Shoe Company, philanthropist, and loving and wise family patriarch. In 1955, his philanthropy found its first roots here on Mayflower Hill and grew as the years passed, nurtured by the love for Waterville and Colby College he shared with his wife Dorothy "Bibby" Levine Alfond '38 and generations of their family whose lives have been enriched by their time here.

Deeply devoted to the State of Maine, Harold Alfond was committed to enhancing educational opportunity, recreation and healthcare access for all. As a lifelong athlete and sports fan, he believed that athletics offer invaluable benefits and opportunities for personal growth to all members of a community, especially for the young.

The Harold Alfond Athletics and Recreation Center honors Harold Alfond and the profound impact of his philanthropy, and that of his family and foundation, on the Colby and Waterville Community.

The 350,000-square-foot Harold Alfond Athletics and Recreation Center is the largest in a series of investments by Colby College into best-in-class facilities for competitive and recreational athletics. These investments will provide access to the greater Waterville community and become a regional center for sports training and competition as part of our community partnership and economic development effort.

From the Desk of Amanda V. DeMartino - Harold Alfond Director of Athletics

“The Harold Alfond Athletics and Recreation Center is a representation of Colby’s commitment to providing not just students but the entire campus community opportunities for athletic, recreational and wellness participation. I’m fortunate to observe daily how this facility inspires and motivates our students to push themselves in achieving their athletic performance and fitness goals.

The building truly is a one-of-a-kind, state of the art facility that is unmatched at this level. It’s a really well-designed space, and when you tour the facility, be it the three-story Boulos Family Fitness Center or one of the five competition venues, the details that went into creating a unique and welcoming environment are evident. Beyond the athletics, recreational and fitness opportunities it provides, the building includes multiple conference rooms that are widely used by various departments on campus, and comfortable spaces for students to connect with each other, study or simply relax.”

“The Harold Alfond Athletics and Recreation Center was also built with the intention to serve the entire Waterville community. We want the facility to be used by community members of all ages, whether it be for state high school athletic competitions, the adult walking program with our Maine General Health's Peter Alfond Prevention & Healthy Living Center partnership or youth events.  Another primary goal is for the community to feel excited about the fan experience and supporting the Mules in action.  We really look forward to continuing to build out the fan experience and engaging more with the community in a way that we can start to be seen more locally as an entertainment venue.  Our students work extremely hard to compete at the highest level of Division III. We’re proud of that and we want our athletic contests to be a place where the community can come together to not just support the Mules but to have fun engaging and connecting with each other."

  - Amanda V. DeMartino, Harold Alfond Director of Athletics

“Athletics and Recreation at Colby College continues to thrive with innovative recreational programming at the Harold Alfond Athletics and Recreation Center.  Our goal is to move forward with a unique model in which Recreation Services are, feels, and operates with the same level of support and importance as varsity programming.  We aim to continue bridging the gap between Athletics, Faculty and Staff, our broader campus community, Alumni, Family and Friends."

 - Nashid Bracy, Director of Recreation Services; Associate Director of Athletics

Colby College’s recreation program develops and educates the campus community physically, ethically, and mentally through recreational activities that encourage lifelong healthy habits. Colby's definition of collegiate recreation aligns with that of the NIRSA Leaders in Collegiate Recreation in that it comprises the services, programs, equipment, facilities, and staff that provides recreation opportunities for the entire campus community.

All students, faculty and staff have community access to the Harold Alfond Athletics and Recreation Center, daily, from 8am to 9pm. Campus community members are free to utilize the center during those hours for a multitude of purposes, including informal recreation which allows for unstructured and voluntary use of venues like the Boulos Family Fitness Center, the aquatics center, Margaret M. Crook Center, the Jack Kelley Rink, squash center, indoor competition center, and Aidan's Climbing and Bouldering Wall during designated hours, as well as organized activities which include group fitness classes held in the O'Neil Family Wellness Studios, Climbing Nights, club and intramural sports.

"The Harold Alfond Athletics and Recreation Center is beautiful and students will be so excited to have a facility like this to utilize during their four years at Colby. The investment also shows a commitment to excellence in everything Colby is doing. It is important for students to know that they are cared about in all aspects of their lives and Colby is showing that they are committed to making the academic, athletic, arts, and global experiences top notch."
