Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Mules Thrash Maine Maritime 7-0

Waterville, Maine - The Colby Men's Soccer team returned home this evening for their third non-conference matchup of the year against Maine Maritime Academy. From the whistle, the Mules dominated the game, both technically and tactically. A controlled first half fueled a confident second, leading Colby to a 7-0 thumping and taking their overall record to 2-1-1.

The first ten minutes showed the Mules' class and composure against an inferior opponent relative to their previous game against #1-ranked Tufts. Colby played an expansive style of soccer, with their front four pinned high and wide, allowing Ikkei Yasuda and Jude Gussen to dictate the midfield and find space in between the lines. Charlie Scott's runs from the high line allowed the Mules to break forward, while their wingbacks offered an outlet and posed a threat out wide. The two goals in the first half came directly from these combinations, as Scott found striker Anthony Bugliari for Colby's first and a dangerous cross from right winger Luke Cunniffe forced an own goal from MMA.

Half-time adjustments from Mariners briefly subdued the influence of Gussen and Yasuda in the midfield but it only opened up space out wide for the Mules. Eric Normandeau and Will Kogelmann bombed forward from their wide defensive positions, combining with Colby's wingers and allowing them to drift inside. The Mules' first goal of the half came from this attacking position, as Cunniffe found himself at the top right edge of the box dribbling into the 18, and forcing a penalty kick that he later converted. From then on, Colby played with confidence and continued to pick apart MMA. Leo Robison finished off a strike that bounced to him off the crossbar, while Santi Canencio Moreno headed in a brilliant cross from Ethan Soroca. Justin Dawes rounded out the scoring with a quick brace that got the Mules' bench the loudest it had been all game.

Colby continues their home game stretch on Saturday, September 19th, as they host Williams College in their second NESCAC conference matchup of the season.
