No. 19 softball splits non-conference doubleheader with No. 20 Husson

WATERVILLE, Maine – The No. 19 ranked Colby College softball team split a non-conference doubleheader No. 20 ranked Husson University on Thursday afternoon at Colby Softball Field, earning a walk-off 3-2 victory in eight innings in game one before falling 4-2 in the nightcap.

GAME 1: No. 19 Colby 3, No. 20 Husson 2

Husson (15-3) wasted little time getting on the board in the first inning off a sacrifice fly before Colby (15-4) took a 2-1 lead in the second inning.

Junior Caroline DeSimone led off the inning with walk and advanced to second when senior Victoria Ramirez was hit by a pitch. Ramirez and DeSimone moved into scoring position after senior Kathryne Clay laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt before sophomore Julia Berry drove both Ramirez and DeSimone on a single up the middle to give the Mules a one run advantage.

The Eagles scored the game-tying run in the fifth on an RBI single to centerfield.

The game remained tied until the bottom of the eighth inning when senior Emma Burnham drove in junior Kat Xiong with a walk off single to left center to give the Mules the 3-2 victory.

Burnham, Ramirez and Berry each recorded a hit in the victory to lead the Mules' offense in the opening game.

Sophomore Sophia Meade (4-1) picked up the win in the circle for the Mules in relief, after firing 3.1 innings without giving up a run and just one hit. Senior KC DeSarno earned a no decision after allowing two earned runs off five hits with two strikeouts in 4.2 innings.

GAME 2: No. 20 Husson 4, No. 19 Colby 2

In game two, the Mules took an early lead in the third after Burnham drove Xiong for a 1-0 advantage before Husson responded with two in the fourth on an RBI single up the middle and an RBI groundout for a 2-1 lead.

Burnham tied the game at 2-2 in the fifth when she went bridge down the left field line.

The Eagles scored twice in the top of the seventh on an RBI infield single and a Colby miscue before Husson retired the Mules in order in the bottom half of the frame to secure the 4-2 victory.

Senior Carissa Cassidy went 3-for-4 to lead the Mules in game two, while Burnham and Ramirez had two-hit performances in the setback.

In the circle, freshman Sharlotte Stazinski took the loss in relief of junior Ashley Correll, who allowed two runs (one earned) off two hits in 3.1 innings. Stazinski pitched 3.2 innings in relief, allowing two unearned runs with three strikeouts in the game two loss.

The Mules return to action on Saturday when they travel to Hamilton College for a NESCAC doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
