Waterville, Maine - The Colby College Baseball team displayed resilience in the final frames on Friday afternoon, racking up 11 hits but ultimately falling 7-4 to Trinity College in the first of the series.
The Mules battled back from an early deficit, finding their first spark in the third inning.
Patrick Shrake jump started the offense with a single and later crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly from
Tony Silva to knot the game at 1-1.
After Trinity regained the lead, Colby's defense and pitching kept the game within reach.
Thomas Rioux turned in a solid start, striking out four over six innings of work.
Ryan Heldenbergh provided a clean ninth inning in relief, sitting down the Bantams in order to give the Mules one last chance.
Colby's bats came alive in the late innings, highlighted by a solo home run over the right-field wall from
Will Burns in the eighth. In the seventh,
Myles Gythfeldt drove a deep double to right-center to bring home Shrake, who finished the day with three hits and two runs scored.
The Mules continued to press in the bottom of the ninth, loading the bases after singles from
Henry Silva, Shrake, and
Tony Silva.
Myles Gythfeldt added his second RBI of the day with a single to left-center, but the comeback bid fell just short as Trinity managed to escape the jam.
Gythfeldt and Shrake led the way with three hits apiece, while Burns contributed two hits, including his home run.
Colby returns to action Saturday against the Bantams for a doubleheader, hoping to build off their momentum from the later innings and secure the lead in the Eastern NESCAC Division.
