No. 19 softball concludes dominant NESCAC weekend with sweep of Amherst

AMHERST, Mass. – The No. 19 Colby College softball team used timely power and strong pitching on its way to a dominant NESCAC doubleheader sweep of Amherst College on Sunday at the Amherst Softball Field, winning game one 13-6 and game two 5-1.

GAME 1 – No. 19 Colby 13, Amherst 6:

After a scoreless first inning, sophomore Avery Lyman and senior Victoria Ramirez began the next inning with back-to-back singles. With two outs, sophomore Julia Berry followed with an RBI single down the left-field line to plate Lyman to give Colby (19-4, 5-1 NESCAC) a 1-0 lead.

The Mules extended its lead to 6-0 in the top of the third. Senior Carissa Cassidy opened with a bunt to third base. Senior Emma Burnham then lifted a double down center field to plate Cassidy. A follow-up bunt from junior Ella Wilcox pushed Burnham into scoring position at third. A walk to junior Julianna Kiley loaded the bases with zero outs before junior Caroline DeSimone was hit by the pitch to plate Burnham. Following two back-to-back outs, senior Kelsey Sullivan smashed the ball to left center to plate DeSimone, Kiley and Wilcox to take a 6-0 advantage.

In the bottom half of the third, Amherst (7-15, 3-7 NESCAC) rallied with a five-run inning to cut their deficit to one before Kiley hit an RBI single up the middle to send home Cassidy with the Mules' seventh run of the game.

Colby added four more runs in the sixth inning to put the game away off an RBI single by Lyman, two fielding errors and a passed ball to extend its lead to 11-5.

Errors continued to plague the Mammoths in the seventh as a wild pitch and a fielding error gave Colby a 13-5 advantage heading into the final frame.

Sullivan went 1-for-4 with three RBIs and a double. Lyman finished 3-for-5 with two runs and an RBI while Cassidy added three hits and three runs.

Sophomore Sophia Meade (6-1) earned the win in the circle for the Mules after allowing one earned run off five hits with two strikeouts in 4.2 innings of relief work.

GAME 2 – No. 19 Colby 5, Amherst 1:

In the second game, Cassidy opened the game by getting hit by the pitch, stole second before moving into scoring position on wild pitch that also allowed Burnham to advanced to second. Burnham reached base on a fielding error. With one out, Kiley ripped a double to left center to plate both runners to give Colby a 2-0 lead.

The Mules extended their lead to 3-0 in the top of the fourth as DeSimone reached on a fielding error, stole second, then touched home on a wild pitch.

DeSimone then sent a single up the middle in the fifth to knock in Burnham to put the Mules up 4-0 before Amherst scored its lone run in sixth off a Colby miscue.

Colby added an insurance run in the seventh after DeSimone reached base on a walk, advanced to second on a wild pitch and later scored on an RBI single to left field by Lyman.

Kiley, DeSimone, Lyman, Ramirez and senior Kathryne Clay all recorded hits for the Mules in the game two victory.

First-year Sharlotte Stazinski delivered a complete-game performance in the circle, allowing just four hits and one run (unearned) while striking out five.

The Mules return to action on Saturday when they host Williams College for a NESCAC doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
