Box Score Waterville, ME – The Colby College women's tennis team faced a difficult conference challenge on Saturday, falling 6-1 to a strong Wesleyan University squad at the Alfond-Wales Tennis Courts. Despite the team score, the match featured several hard-fought flights as the team continued its stretch of NESCAC home play.
Wesleyan gained the early advantage by sweeping the doubles point. At the No. 1 position, Isabella Suk and Michaela Landry fell 6-3 to the Cardinals' duo of Gatsiounis and Youngberg. The No. 2 pairing of Kat Lowy and Waka Aida battled through their set before falling 6-4, while Ella Novion and Jade Finestone dropped a 6-2 decision at the No. 3 spot.
The intensity remained high throughout singles competition, highlighted by a victory at the bottom of the lineup and a marathon three-set battle at the No. 5 flight. Waka Aida provided a bright spot for the team at No. 6 singles, delivering a clinical 6-4, 6-2 win over Burnett. At the No. 5 position, Tina Barrow pushed her opponent to the limit; after dropping the first set 2-6, she roared back with a 6-4 win in the second to force a deciding ten-point tiebreaker, ultimately falling just short with a 3-10 finish.
Elsewhere in the lineup, Soumya Wijesekera put up a strong fight at No. 4, falling 4-6, 3-6 to Leroy Garibay. At the top of the order, Jade Finestone and Ella Novion were defeated at the No. 1 and No. 2 spots, respectively, while Michaela Landry fell at the No. 3 position.
The team will look to bounce back against Connecticut College tomorrow and build on these competitive performances as they continue their conference schedule.
