Waterville, Maine - The Colby College Baseball returned home after a long stretch in Florida for another non-conference match up against the Panthers of Plymouth State University on Tuesday afternoon. The Mules used a powerful four-run eighth inning to break a late-game tie and secure an 8-4 victory over the Panthers.
The Mules found themselves in an early hole after Plymouth State jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first. However, the Colby offense responded immediately in the bottom half of the frame.
Myles Oo delivered a clutch two-out double to left center, driving in
Tony Silva and
Myles Gythfeldt to cut the deficit to one.
Colby pulled even in the second inning when
Corey Aubuchon led off with a walk and later crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly from
Patrick Shrake. After the Panthers regained a slim lead in the fifth, the Mules manufactured another run in the sixth as
Myles Oo doubled and was brought home by another Aubuchon sacrifice fly to knot the game at 4-4.
The decisive blow came in the bottom of the eighth. With the bases loaded and the score tied,
Marco Zirpolo singled to right field to drive in
Myles Oo for the go-ahead run. The Mules didn't stop there, adding insurance runs through a fielder's choice by
Henry Silva, an RBI double by Shrake, and a sacrifice fly by Gythfeldt to stretch the lead to 8-4.
Elliott Seymour earned the win in relief, providing steady pitching down the stretch to keep the Panthers at bay. Oo led the offensive charge with two doubles and two RBIs, while Shrake and Aubuchon each contributed a hit and an RBI in the winning effort.
The victory moves Colby to 10-7 on the season as they prepare to face the Tufts Jumbos on the road for their first NESCAC match up on Friday and Saturday.
