Softball walks off with split on day two in Flordia

CLERMONT, Fla. - The Colby College softball team split a pair of games in Florida on Saturday, dropping an 8–4 decision to Babson College before bouncing back with a 3–2 walk-off victory over Carleton College later in the day.

Babson 8, Colby 4:

In the opening game, sophomore Avery Lyman's two-out, two-run single gave Colby (3-1) a 3-0 lead in the top of the first, but Babson (6-6) scored three in the bottom half of the frame on two RBI ground outs and an RBI single to make it 3-3.

The Beavers took a 4-3 lead on an RBI knock in the third before junior Caroline DeSimone scored on an RBI ground out by junior Juliana Kiley in the top of the fourth inning tied the game at 4-4. Babson then scored four times in the bottom of the fourth inning to break the game open.

The Mules scored the final run of the game in the sixth inning on an RBI double by senior Victoria Ramirez.

Senior Emma Burnham singled three times, Lyman went 2-for-4 with two RBI and junior Ella Wilcox singled twice, drove in a run and scored twice to lead the Mules' 14-hit attack.

Freshman Lucy Stathis suffered the loss after giving up four runs, all of them unearned, over three innings of relief in the circle. Junior Ashley Correll, who started the game, allowed four earned runs on two hits in two innings. Senior Kathryne Clay pitched a scoreless inning.

Colby 3, Carleton 2:

In game two, Colby was in a tightly contested pitching duel against Carleton (8-3). The Knights struck first in the top of the first inning when they scored a run on a single up the middle before adding another with a single to center field to take a 2-0 lead after the fourth inning.

In the sixth, sophomore Julia Berry led off the inning by reaching base on a Knight miscue, stole second and scored on a triple to right center by Burnham. A bloop single to center field by Wilcox allowed Burnham to score the game's tying run.

After senior KC DeSarno threw a scoreless top of the seventh inning, Lyman led off the bottom of half of frame by smashing a single through the left side of the infield before being lifted for pinch runner freshman Lauren Valji. Freshman Sophia Hammel laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt to move Valji into scoring position. Valji scored the winning run on an errant throw to second base after the Knights tried to turn a double play off a line out by Berry.

Burnham, Wilcox, Lyman and senior Kelsey Sullivan each recorded hits for Colby in the victory.

DeSarno picked up her third win of the season after allowing one earned run off six hits with one strikeout in five innings of relief work. Clay earned the start for the Mules in game two. The right-hander allowed one earned run off four hits in two innings.

The Mules return to action tomorrow when they battle Union College and No. 23 University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh at 10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.
