Amherst, Mass. - The Colby College Women's Ice Hockey team faced No. 2 Amherst College for the second consecutive day and once again delivered a statement performance. After shutting out the Mammoths on Friday night for the first time in nearly 3.5 years, the Mules followed up with a 2-1 shootout victory, highlighted by a 47-save performance from goaltender
Ally Martiniello.
After yesterday's impressive win, Colby carried that momentum into today's matchup, bringing high energy from the opening faceoff. The Mules struck first after earning a power-play opportunity at 3:57, and at 4:50,
Marion Legge capitalized to give Colby a 1-0 lead with assists from
Sophie Melsness and
Molly Lefebvre. Amherst tied the game at 11:48, but Colby remained composed. Despite facing heavy pressure, the Mules' defense stood strong, and won 10 of 18 faceoffs. Amherst outshot Colby 30-8 in the opening period, but Martiniello was outstanding, turning aside 14 shots to keep the game even. The second period featured fast-paced, back-and-forth action, though neither team found the back of the net. Colby earned a power-play opportunity, totaled 13 shots, and won nine faceoffs. Martiniello continued her stellar play with 15 more saves. Intensity remained high in the third period, with Colby earning two additional power-play chances and firing 20 shots on goal. The Mules' defense held firm, and Martiniello made 12 more saves to preserve the 1-1 tie at the end of regulation. Overtime showcased strong effort from both teams. Colby successfully killed off an Amherst power play, registered four shots, and Martiniello added six more saves. After five scoreless minutes, the game advanced to a shootout. Sophomore
Lulu Gray netted the decisive goal to secure the 2-1 shootout victory for the Mules. Martiniello capped off her performance with a season-high 47 saves.
Colby returns to Waterville to prepare for a Friday night NESCAC matchup against Wesleyan University at 7:00 PM.
