Philadelphia, PA - In the CSA Championship quarterfinals, the Colby Mules defeated Western Ontario 6-3 to secure their spot in the semifinal round.
Hungry for redemption after a 7-2 loss to the Mustangs in last year's quarterfinals, the Mules opened the match with dominant intensity. Colby surged through the first round of play, securing three consecutive victories from Carlos Zendejas '27, Omar Bastawy '29, and Avery Rosenberg '27. Each player dropped a narrow opening game (12-14, 9-11, and 8-11, respectively) before storming back to win three straight games. These marathon battles, each lasting over 40 minutes, provided the essential momentum needed to propel the Mules toward the team victory.
In the second flight of matches, Hamza Wessam '29 started strong, claiming the first two games. After a narrow 10-12 slip in the third, he regained control to take the fourth game 11-9. Youssef Mostafa '26 then officially clinched the team win in a grueling 45-minute, four-game battle that featured two 11-9 frames. The final victory of the day came from sophomore Timo Radionov '28 further padding the Mules' lead.
Even in defeat, the Mules showed immense resolve. At the seventh position, Sebastian Campos '26 demonstrated incredible mental fortitude. After dropping the first game 10-12, Campos bounced back with dominant 11-3 and 11-4 wins before falling 8-11 in the fourth. In the deciding fifth game, Campos sparked a heroic comeback from a 3-9 deficit before ultimately falling just short, 9-11.
The Mules return to the courts tomorrow at 6:00 PM for a high-stakes semifinal matchup against NESCAC rival Amherst—the third meeting between these two programs this season.
