Nashua, New Hampshire - Colby Men's Soccer (4-2-4) got back to winning ways this afternoon against non-conference opponent Rivier University (3-6-2). A lone goal from senior Luke Pentikis saw the Mules improve to 4 wins on the year before heading into their final stretch of NESCAC conference games.
Although the first half was scoreless, Colby created quality chances in Rivier's half. Twenty minutes in, Justin Dawes forced the first save of the game, and minutes later, Ethan Soroca rattled a shot off the post. The Mules continued to put the pressure on as Soroca fired another strike, this time hitting the target but not beating the Raider shot stopper.Â
Coming out of the break, both teams battled for possession in search of the opener. Colby dominated this midfield battle and benefited on the attacking end. Jude Gussen had two efforts denied around the ten-minute mark and Owen Vighetti found the same fate minutes later. But the breakthrough came in the 71st minute as Maxim Hersh and Miles Gibson combined to find Luke Pentikis for the eventual winner. Right before full-time, Soroca looked determined to get his goal and double the Mules' lead, but his header was snatched by the Rivier goalie.
Colby is back in action Saturday, October 10th, as they travel to Middletown, Connecticut to face Wesleyan University.
