Wilmington, N.Y. - The Colby College Alpine Ski team opened the St. Lawrence Carnival with a rare Thursday event, competing in the Giant Slalom at Whiteface Mountain. Hot off a third place finish a week ago,
Althea Noyes (headline photo) claimed silver this time around to lead the women's team to a fifth place finish out of the 13-team field. With five DNF's on the men's side, the men's team slid into 11th place.
Wearing bib 2, Noyes ripped down the first run with a third place time. The sophomore won the second run to leap into second overall, a little over four tenths of a second behind Isabella Knutsen from Saint Michael's College.
Kate McKenney had a solid day finishing 17th, and
Carissa Cassidy closed out the scoring for Colby in 35th.
Brady Malboeuf (photo left) used a stellar second run from outside the flip for Colby's men's team, just one second off the pace, to vault into 17th.
John Kelleher came through with his second top-30 GS finish in as many tries, cruising into 24th. The group as a whole came up short on the scoring front, as teams need three finishers to score a complete squad and Colby had two men on the first run and three on the second who did not finish the course.
The Mules are back in action Friday to close out the St. Lawrence Carnival with the Slalom.
