NORTHAMPTON, Mass. — Colby Volleyball ran its unbeaten start to 9–0 with two wins Saturday at the Smith College Tournament, sweeping UMass Dartmouth 3–0 before rallying past Babson 3–2. The Mules controlled the opener 25–16, 25–14, 25–15, then flipped a five-set against the Beavers, 21–25, 25–27, 25–20, 25–21, 15–6.
Against UMass Dartmouth, the Mules hit .310 and outpaced the Corsairs in every phase, finishing with 36 kills, eight aces, five blocks, 36 assists and 49 digs. Emma Davis and Addison Pillis led the offense with six kills apiece, while LJ Grant added five. Gabby Grujic and Grant each served three aces while Pillis led the net with four blocks. Jordan Lee and Grujic split the setting load with 16 assists each, while Grant and Lee tallied10 digs apiece and Reese Loyd added nine.
Colby then showed grit versus Babson, shaking off a two-set hole by tightening first contact and turning the match at the net. The Mules held the Beavers to .087 overall and dominated the fifth set 15–6 behind clean side-outs and a closing block. On Colby's line, the team collected 42 kills, seven aces, 16 blocks, 41 assists and 67 digs at .114. Brady Moseley paced the attack with 13 kills while Cyanne Jones and Grant followed with eight and seven, respectively. From the service line, Lee delivered three aces while Moseley and Jones recorded two. Jones was dominant at the net with nine blocks, backed by Alexa Peguero with four and Grant with three. Grujic steered the offense with 20 assists closely followed by Lee with 14. Grujic also anchored the defense with 17 digs supported by Moseley with 14 and Loyd with 12.
Colby leaves Northampton 9–0 and brimming with momentum to open the NESCAC conference on Friday, Sept. 19 at 7:00 p.m. against Wesleyan University in Middletown, CT.
