WATERVILLE, Maine – Junior
Victoria Ramirez walk-off sacrifice fly in game two allowed the Colby College Softball to earn a split in their New England Small College Athletic Conference doubleheader with Hamilton College on a cold and snowy Saturday at the Colby Softball Field. The Mules fell 5-4 in eight innings in game one before earning the 11-10 walk-off victory in the night cap.
GAME ONE: Hamilton 5, Colby 4 (8 Innings)
Hamilton (10-4, 2-2 NESCAC) jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after a two-run home run in the first and an RBI double in second before Colby (9-7, 3-1 NESCAC) cut their deficit to one in the third inning.
Junior
Emma Burnham led off the bottom of the third with a double to center field and scored on a triple down the left field line by sophomore
Caroline DeSimone. DeSimone would later score on an RBI fielder's choice by junior
Carissa Cassidy.
The Continentals answered with a run in the top of the fifth inning to claim a 4-2 lead before the Mules chipped away at the deficit with single runs in the sixth and seventh innings off an RBI single by Cassidy and a sacrifice fly by junior
Victoria Ramirez to force extra innings.
In extras, Hamilton scored the game winning run off a wild pitch.
Junior
Kathryne Clay allowed three earned runs off four hits in three innings before giving away to junior
KC DeSarno (2-2), who suffered the loss after giving up two runs (one earned) on three hits with two strikeouts over five frames.
DeSimone went 3-3 with three runs scored, a triple and an RBI while Cassidy and Burnham each had two hits apiece in the setback.
In the bottom of fifth inning, Cassidy became the 13th Mule in program history to record 100 career hits when she singled off the Continentals' pitcher.
GAME TWO: Colby 11, Hamilton 10
The Continentals kicked off the scoring in the top of the first inning when they scored on a Mule miscue.
The Mules answered in the bottom of the first inning by scoring three runs on back-to-back singles by sophomore
Ella Wilcox and freshman
Avery Lyman.
Hamilton scored two runs in the second and claimed an 8-3 lead off a Colby miscue in the top of the third inning.
Colby cut the deficit to one in the bottom of the third inning when Cassidy scored on a fielder's choice off the bat of Lyman and
Juliana Kiley smashed a three-run home run to left center.
The teams swapped scores in the fifth inning before Hamilton took a 10-8 lead going into the bottom of the seventh inning off a Colby error when the Mules managed to score three runs to earn the walk off victory.
Kiley led off the inning with a single through the left side before being replaced by pinch runner sophomore
Kat Xiong. Xiong advanced to second on walk to senior
Katelyn Hays before Hays was replaced by Clay. Senior
Erika MacLeod singled down the right-field line to score Xiong and advance Clay to third. Burnham followed with a single to center, plating Clay with the tying run. DeSimone laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt to advanced MacLeod and Burnham to second and third before the Continentals issued Cassidy an intentional walk to load the bases for Ramirez. She would then hit a sacrifice fly to center field that allowed MacLeod to score the winning run.
Sophomore
Ashley Correll (3-3) went the distance, allowing ten runs (six earned) off 11 hits with two strikeouts to earn the victory for the Mules in the circle.
Ramirez and Wilcox each recorded three hits apiece while Lyman and Kiley both drove in three runs in the walk off victory.
The Mules return to action on Tuesday when they host the University of Maine at Farmington for a non-conference doubleheader at the Colby Softball Field. The first pitch for game one is scheduled for 4 p.m.
