Softball drops road NESCAC doubleheader to Williams

WILLAMSTOWN, Mass. – The Colby College softball team was swept by Williams College in a New England Small College Athletic Conference doubleheader at Cole Field on Sunday morning. The Mules fell 13-4 in five innings in game one to the Ephs and 9-1 in five innings in game two.

GAME ONE: Williams 13, Colby 4 (5 innings)

Williams (24-11, 11-5 NESCAC) scored six runs in the first inning off six hits and a Mule miscue.

The Mules answered with two runs in the top of the second off an RBI single by sophomore Juliana Kiley and an RBI ground out off the bat of senior Erika MacLeod.

The Ephs quickly punched back, scoring three runs in the second and four in the third to take a 13-2 lead.

Colby (12-19, 6-8 NESCAC) added a two-run homer late by sophomore Ella Wilcox to cap the scoring in game one.

Sophomore Ashley Correll (5-7) took the circle to start the first game and suffered the loss after allowing six runs (four earned) on six hits. Junior Kathryne Clay gave up three runs on three hits in 0.2 innings and junior KC DeSarno yielded four runs on four hits with a strikeout in 2.2 innings of work.

Junior Victoria Ramirez finished game one with three hits while Wilcox, junior Carissa Cassidy, Kiley, senior Katelyn Hays and senior Colleen McAvoy each recorded a hit.

GAME TWO: Williams 9, Colby 1 (5 innings)

The Ephs tallied the initial run of the contest with a run-scoring ground out before the Mules tied the game in the top of the third on an RBI single to center field by junior Emma Burnham.

Williams' offense erupted scoring the games final eight runs over the final three innings to earn the mercy-rule victory.

 Freshman Sophia Meade suffered the loss after allowing eight earned runs off eight hits in 3.1 innings. Correll pitched one inning in relief, yielding one unearned run off three hits.

Burham, Cassidy and freshman Avery Lyman all had one hit apiece in the setback for the Mules.

Colby returns home to host Bates College on Wednesday for a NESCAC doubleheader at 4 and 6 p.m.
