Hartford, Connecticut - The second season under the Jake Bernhardt tenure hasn't exactly gone to plan, but offers hope for years to come as Colby tested Trinity this weekend. In what would've been a brilliant comeback, the Mules almost responded to a three-point deficit on three separate occasions, but ultimately fell to the Bantams, 8-11. This weekend's loss takes Colby 3-8 overall and 0-8 in NESCAC conference play.
The first quarter was a wake-up call for the Mules as they were shut out offensively and allowed 3 goals. Will Heisler's 10 saves kept Colby in the game as their offense was yet to test Trinity. The second quarter brought out a completely different team, one which took a 4-3 lead behind the sophomore pair of Easton Bello and Gavin Rothenberg. Bello led the charge, scoring three straight in six minutes, with two being solo efforts and the middle coming from Rothenberg. The latter buried Colby's go-ahead goal to conclude a promising response to the first quarter deficit, but after two late goals from Trinity, the Mules trailed once again, heading into halftime down 4-5.Â
Coming out of the break, Colby tied the game as Bello found Rothenberg for his second of the game. Trinity, like in the first half, snatched the momentum back as they went on a quick 3-0 run, putting the game slightly out of reach for the Mules. To end the third quarter, Rothenberg completed his hat-trick and gave Colby one back, but after an early Trinity goal in the fourth, the Mules found themselves down by three again. Back-to-back goals from Bello gave Colby a chance, pulling them within 1, but the Bantams responded to seal the win.
The Mules are back in action Saturday, April 19th, hosting Williams College in their last home game of the year.
