Orlando, Fla. - The Colby Men's Tennis team began its first spring break trip in the Sunshine State on Monday afternoon against Lawrence University. The match was the first of three that the Mules will play on their trip, with all three hosted at the USTA National Campus.
The Mules came out strong in doubles at the #2 position, with senior captain Josh Kaplan and sophomore Kevin Mortimer teaming up to defeat their opponents 6-0 in dominant fashion. After first-year Marco Ziets-Segura and junior Aidan Kwong fell behind 2-4, they came back strong, defeating their opponents 7-5 at the #1 spot, clinching the doubles point for Colby. At the #3 position, seniors Sriram Das and Julian Cangieter-Hernandez rounded things off by defeating their opponents 7-5 in a tight contest.
Colby continued its momentum into singles play. Mortimer was the first to finish his match, winning 6-0, 6-0 at the #6 spot. First-year Diego Sosa followed suit with another 6-0, 6-0 win at the #3 spot to put the Mules within one match of victory. First-year Jason Daly clinched the match for the Mules, winning 6-1, 6-1 at the #2 spot. Senior captain Jake Cohen then secured victory with a 6-1, 6-2 victory at the #1 spot. Making his debut for Colby was first-year Matthew Jeong at the #5 spot. Jeong began his Colby career with an impressive display, defeating his opponent 6-2, 6-1. Ending the match for the Mules was Das with a 6-1, 6-1 victory in just under an hour. The Mules dominantly defeated Lawrence 7-0, with all ten members of the team making significant contributions.
The Mules will next face Union College at the USTA National Campus on Tuesday afternoon.
