Colby falls to Amherst in NCAA Women’s Ice Hockey Championship Quarterfinals

Amherst, Mass. – The Colby College Women's Ice Hockey team faced off against the #3-ranked Amherst College Mammoths in the quarterfinal round of the DIII NCAA Women's Ice Hockey Championship. Despite a strong effort and relentless play, the Mules fell short, 4-1.

Having won both prior matchups against Amherst this season, Colby entered the game with high energy. However, Amherst struck early, taking a 1-0 lead just 2:44 into play. The Mules generated strong offensive pressure with 18 total shots, including nine on goal, and won 11 of 19 faceoffs. With five minutes remaining, Amherst capitalized on a power play to extend their lead to 2-0. Goaltender Mandy Busky remained strong in net, making nine saves to keep Colby in the game. The second period saw lots of back and forth action. As both teams battled for control, Amherst extended their lead at 6:15, making it a 3-0 game. Five minutes later Colby earned a power play at 11:27 where they were able to rip off five shots, but couldn't convert it to a goal. The remainder of the period saw strong offensive chances on both sides, but neither team could find the back of the net. Colby recorded 16 total shots, eight on goal, and won nine of 19 faceoffs while Busky added eight more saves. Facing a three-goal deficit, the Mules pushed hard to turn the game around as they entered the third period. Amherst struck again just 1:46 into the period, but Colby answered back three minutes later when Anya Jiang netted her second goal of the season at 4:57. The Mules continued to bring the pressure as they earned a late power play, but were unable to close the gap. Despite the final score of 4-1, Colby dominated offensively in the last 20 minutes of play, registering 21 total shots and another 10 saves from Busky, bringing her game total to 27.

Although the 2024-2025 season has come to an end, the Mules had an outstanding season, finishing with 18 wins and four players earning All-NESCAC honors. With a strong core and continued development, Colby looks to build on this success in the seasons ahead.
