DeSimone powers Colby to opening day sweep of Terriers

WATERVILLE, Maine – Colby College softball team opened its 2025 season with a sweep of a non-conference doubleheader with Thomas College at Colby Softball Field on Wednesday afternoon. The Mules won the opener by a 3-1 score and completed the twinbill sweep with a 5-1 victory.

Game 1:

In the first inning, Colby (2-0) got on the scoreboard first with a solo home run to left field off the bat of sophomore Caroline DeSimone to give the Mules a 1-0 lead.

Thomas (5-9) tied things up at 1-1 with a single and a Mule miscue in the top of the third inning.

The Mules were able to respond quickly with two runs off the bat of DeSimone in the bottom of the inning, making it 3-1.

DeSimone led the way offensively for the Mules in game one, going 2-3 with two home runs, three RBI and two runs scored. Sophomore Ella Wilcox tallied two hits in three plate-appearances in the game one victory.

In the circle, sophomore Ashley Correll went the distance for the Mules and gave one unearned run off two hits with four strikeouts to earn the victory.

Game 2:

Junior KC DeSarno was locked in a pitching duel with the Terriers' pitcher through the first three innings before Thomas took a 1-0 lead off a Colby error.

 The Terriers held a 1-0 lead going into the bottom of the fourth when the Mules managed to score two runs off a double to left field by junior Kelsey Sullivan to make it a 2-1 game.

Colby added three insurance runs in the fifth inning off back-to-back hits by junior Victoria Ramirez and sophomore Juliana Kiley and a sacrifice fly from freshman Avery Lyman.

DeSarno claimed the victory in the circle for the Mules after allowing one unearned run on one hit with four punch outs over four innings. Freshman Sophia Meade tossed three shutout innings in relief, allowing three hits with three strikeouts.

Kiley finished the game with a 1-2 day with a double, two runs scored and an RBI. Sullivan went 1-2 with a double and two RBI while Wilcox and Lyman each had a double.

The Mules are back in action on Saturday when they face the University of Wisconsin at Whitewater at 12:30 p.m., followed by Buffalo State University at 2:30 p.m. to begin their 10-game spring trip in Florida.
