Match Recap: Women's Tennis |

Colby Takes Down #25 Brandeis

Waterville, Maine - The Colby Women's Tennis team hosted its second home match of the 2025 spring season against the #25 nationally ranked Brandeis University. The match was played inside the Harold Alfond Athletic, with first serve starting at 2 pm. Colby looked to build off its win against Smith College a day prior.

The Mules started strong in doubles play. Junior captain Amelie Gal teamed up with first-year Ella Novion at the #3 position. The duo was dominant from the start, commandingly dispatching their opponents 6-1. Clinching the doubles point for Colby were junior captain Isabella Suk and first-year Waka Aida at the #2 spot. The duo defeated their opponents 6-4, showcasing key poaches and put away volleys at the end.

The Mules continued their doubles momentum into singles play. Sophomore Jade Finestone was the first to complete her match, winning the first set 6-3 against her Brandeis opponent at the #1 position, before her opponent was forced to retire due to a shoulder injury. Aida was next to win for Colby, defeating her opponent in straight sets 6-3, 6-2 in just over an hour at the #4 spot. With the Mules up 3-0, just one more victory was needed to pull off the upset against the #25 ranked team in the country. In a back-and-forth match at the #2 position, sophomore Michaela Landry clinched the dual match for the Mules. Finding herself down 2-5 in the first set, Landry exerted great mental toughness and variety in her shotmaking to win five straight games, winning the first set 7-5. Landry then stayed tough throughout a close, back-and-forth second set, winning 7-6(5) to clinch the match for the Mules.

Colby clinched the match at 4-0, picking up an impressive victory against #25 Brandeis, but they were not done with the winning. At the #3 spot, Novion found herself in a nearly three-hour battle against her Brandeis opponent. With clutch play and dominant forehands, Novion pulled out a thriller, winning 6-3, 4-6, 7-6(6), continuing her stellar start to the season. Suk also played a three-setter, coming back from a set down to defeat her Brandeis opponent at the #6 spot 2-6, 6-2, 1-0(6), showcasing tremendous ball-striking from the baseline.

At the end of the day, Colby was victorious against Brandeis by a score of 6-1, improving their overall record in dual play to 4-1. A top 25 win will surely give the Mules confidence as they head into their spring break trip in California, where they will play four matches in six days.
