Lewiston, Maine - The Colby College Field Hockey played away on Tuesday against the No. 6 ranked Bates Bobcats for their last game of the regular season. Bates took their lead early and Colby fought until the 60th minute, but their effort wasn't enough as Bates finished with a 3-2 win. found the back of the net first and held their lead to walk away with a 2-1 win over Trinity. The Mules finished their season with a 2-8 record in the NESCAC, ranked 9th place.
Both teams came out strong, a long-fought rivalry between the two schools. Bates capitalized early and scored just seven minutes into the first quarter, and then extended their lead to 2-0 in the second quarter. Colby answered back just a minute later with a goal from sophomore
Christina Sweeney, her 11th of the season, assisted by senior captain
Molly Mitchell. Trailing 2-1 going into the second half, Colby outshot Bates in the third quarter; however, the Bobcats still found the back of the net, taking a 3-1 lead. In their final push, junior
Maddie Campbell found the back of the net in an offensive corner, making it a one goal game with five minutes to play. The Mules didn't give up, earning two more penalty corners to try and tie the game, but their efforts weren't enough against the Bates defense. First-year
Ginna Jacoby recorded seven saves for 45 minutes and sophomore
Opal O'Rourke recorded three saves for 15 minutes.
As the last game of the regular season, the Mules will not move on to the NESCAC tournament; however, this season marks a lot of success for the Mules. Sweeney scored a career-high 11 goals and two assists, surpassing her one goal and five assist rookie year. Sweeney currently leads the NESCAC in shots on goal with a total of 49, and is tied for third in goals. Mitchell tallied a career-high of four assists. Jacoby made a total of 88 saves on the season, ranked second in the NESCAC for total saves and leading with 6.77 average saves per game. Teagan Kilpatrick. Current juniors
Bridget Everett and Campbell have been crucial players both offensively and defensively this year and will be stepping up into their senior leadership roles next season.
