Lake Placid, N.Y. - After a short week off, the Colby Alpine Ski Team kicked off the Saint Lawrence Carnival at historic Whiteface Mountain. It was a record-breaking day for the Mules, who fell just short of what could have been a landmark day.
Run one got underway with
Lydia Riddell showing the field how strong she can be at Whiteface. The sight of her All-American performance two years ago she won the first run and set the time to beat for run two.
Carissa Cassidy, coming off of a career-best result in GS last week, skied to 7th place on run one.
Hannah Soria was not far behind in 12th.
On the men's side,
Nolan Sweeney set a blistering first run, skiing aggressively and finishing in second place.
Harrison Digangi skied to 10th on run one.
The day was long, and the hill was dark and bumpy for the majority of the second run. The bumps took out Riddell and Cassidy, who lost a ski on the same gate. However, Soria hung on to finish the day in 12th.
Finn Boissonneault moved up eight spots on the second run to score her first collegiate GS points in 28th.
Marit Kaiser was the third scorer in 31st.
A solid second run from Digangi moved him up to 7th place, even with a mistake. Sweeney hung on second to complete a podium finish. The second-place finish by
Nolan Sweeney is the best result by a Colby men's skier since Vincent Lebrun-Fortin placed second at the University of Vermont Carnival in 2010. He joins Digangi as only the second Colby male skier with a podium since 2011.
The Mules will return to action on Friday with the Slalom portion of the Saint Lawrence Carnival.
