Waterville, Maine - The Colby Football team stands ready for its 2024 campaign, carrying plenty of optimism into the new season. A large and talented senior class will guide the Mules this year.
The Dick McGee Head Coach
Jack Cosgrove, now entering his sixth season at the helm of Colby Football, commented on the group. "The reason for our optimism [this season] is our outstanding Senior Class, made up of 25 experienced and committed student-athletes. Their leadership as a group has been active and obvious to all of us and has raised our standards and expectations of ourselves and each other. They have embraced the responsibility of leadership, held each other and their teammates accountable, and committed themselves to pursue excellence. We look forward to seeing that in action on Saturday."
Key returners for the defense are All-NESCAC first-team linebacker
Julian Young, who led the team with 46 solo tackles last year, and All-NESCAC second-team defensive back
Joshua East. On offense, the Mules will have
Miles Drake at quarterback, who returns from injury. Drake will have plenty of targets in
Matt McHugh and
Jack Sawyer, who combined for 74 catches last season.
Keon Smart will also be back for his senior season after rushing for 388 yards last year.
Brendan Sawyer, All-NESCAC second-team return man, will be back doing the kick return duties again this season.
The Mules' schedule starts with a tough challenge against the reigning Co-Champions, Trinity Bantams. Trinity has won the last 19 matchups against the Mules, but Coach Cosgrove said his squad is undaunted. They "are an elite program in our conference, but every one of us is enthusiastically preparing ourselves for that tremendous challenge."
The home opener will be on homecoming with a showdown against the Williams College Ephs. Colby will host Bates on October 5th, under the lights, to open the CBB.
