Waterville, Maine - Cool, calm, collected. The Mules had no trouble tonight in the wet conditions, breezing past the University of New England 12-5. Colby's first win of the season takes them to 1-1 on the year.
This game started completely different from the last as the Mules were the ones in control. Doug McCarthy opened the scoring in the 12th minute followed 3 minutes later by a man-up goal from Bennett Goller–both assisted by Cormac O'Neill. Freshman Luke Laferriere got in on the action late in the quarter to make it three and O'Neill found himself on the scoring end for Colby's fourth. UNE got a quick goal right before the end of the first quarter but the Mules bounced back with two to open the second as Nick Sokolosky and Cormac Wright got on the scoresheet. Colby went into the half up 8-2 as UNE grabbed another late goal.
Coming out of the break the Mules didn't let up–Sokolosky found the back of the net for his second of the game while Kevin Ewanich got his first of the season. UNE grabbed two goals of their own but Goller brought Colby's lead back to eight. The fourth quarter rolled around with not much left to play for but the Mules finished strong. Kyle Skop won both faceoffs to keep the possession in Colby's hands and only one mishap happened defensively leading to a fifth UNE goal.
In the end the Mules cemented their first win of the season and giving confidence to the team for a tough stretch of games to come. Colby travels down south to face Connecticut College on Saturday, looking for their first NESCAC win.
