Mules Narrowly Lose to Hamilton in Close Comeback

Waterville, Maine - The Mules hosted Hamilton today in a close affair that saw Colby fall 10-13. A strong first quarter made for a promising start but the game got away quickly in the second and third making the deficit insurmountable–even with a strong fourth quarter. The Mules are now 3-3 overall and 1-3 in NESCAC conference play.

Having struggled with falling behind early on this season, Colby controlled the game right from the whistle. Both teams registered over ten shots each and led to two goals a piece. Doug McCarthy opened the scoring while Max Solmssen tied it up to end the quarter. Will Heisler had six saves in the first fifteen minutes, keeping the Mules in the game. Hamilton dominated the following quarter on the scoresheet, outscoring Colby 5-1. However the quarter was more equal than it seemed as both teams each had the same amount of shots, the Mules were just unlucky and couldn't convert. Colby trailed heading into the half, 7-3.

Coming out of the break, the narrative was the same as the second quarter. The back-and-forth tempo proved for a lot of shots and yet again Hamilton converted. They stretched the lead to 6 as they went up 10-4–Ben Reynolds' solo goal was Colby's sole goal in the quarter. The final fifteen minutes completely flipped the momentum around as the Mules dominated. Their insurmountable deficit would've been reached as they scored six goals but conceded three. Freshmen Gavin Rothenberg and Harrison Leenhouts got on the scoresheet, while McCarthy, Nick Sokolosky, and Bennett Goller all got their second of the game. Heisler had a tough job in the second half but came up with 11 saves on the day.

In the end, the Mules seemed put together on both ends of the ball but a dip in focus in the middle allowed for Hamilton to pull away. Colby is back in action this Tuesday as they host Maine Maritime Academy at 7:00 pm.
