Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Aidan Simmonds

Mules Grab Huge Win Against Ranked Tufts

Waterville, Maine - The Colby Men's Basketball team securing a big win following a last-second defensive effort forcing a shot-clock violation against a strong Jumbos squad. The 66-64 victory takes the Mules to 10-10 overall and 2-5 in the NESCAC conference, for a solid bounce back from last week. Tufts are ranked #21 in the nation making this Colby's biggest win of the season and giving them a huge confidence boost heading into the last few games.

Tufts came out strong to open the game and led the whole half. An early seven-point deficit for Colby was concerning but a three-pointer from David Stewart and two from Liam O'Connell brought the Mules within one possession. The Jumbos responded quickly, going up by nine points with five minutes in the half and then eleven with two minutes to go. But Colby didn't falter and came crawling back. Max Poulton knocked down two of his three three-pointers in the half while O'Connell added his third of the half to bring the Mules within four. O'Connell had thirteen points to end the half but Colby still trailed 33-29 heading into the break.

The momentum from the end of the first half must've carried over because Colby came out a whole new team. Poulton made an immediate impact with two go-ahead three-pointers to set the tone. From then on it was back and forth as both teams couldn't break away. Stewart knocked down two threes early on en route to 10 second-half points, but it was all Poulton who tallied 11 and three shots from beyond the arc. With a minute to go and the score tied at 64, Marcos Montiel found Lucas Green in the paint for a clutch layup to put the Mules up two with 30 seconds to go. On the consecutive possession, Tufts was looking for a three but impenetrable defense from Colby stifled any chance.

This was a massive win for the Mules, something they needed heading into a rivalry match against Bates–a team who they lost to in overtime months prior. Colby hosts the Bobcats at 3:00 pm this Saturday in hopes of continuing their promising run of form.
