Waterville, Maine - The Colby College Women's Ice Hockey team hosted the Nor'easters of the University of New England in a non-conference matchup on Tuesday night. The Mules won 4-2, improving their overall record to 3-2-0. At the end of the 1st period, the Mules hosted a teddy bear toss, where spectators threw a new stuffed animal on the ice. Each donation will go to the Colby athletic toy drive where all toys are donated locally.Â
The Mules started the first period with strong offensive pressure, racking up 45 shots compared to UNE's four. Despite three power-play opportunities, Colby couldn't capitalize, and after 15 minutes of intense play, the Mules trailed 0-1. The second period saw plenty of back and forth action, with Colby continuing to dominate offensively, though neither team managed to score. Grace Caligiuri stood tall for the Mules, stopping six of the Nor'easters' seven total shots on goal in the game so far. Entering the third period hungry for a goal, Colby picked up the pressure. Just 1:20 into the period, Courtney Schumacher scored the equalizer, assisted by Maria Pierce. UNE responded with a goal 15 seconds later, but that did not stop Colby. Abby Wick and Beth Sinson struck back with two goals in a four second span, giving the Mules a 3-2 lead. Colby held their group defensively, and with one second remaining, Schumacher sealed the 4-2 victory with an empty net goal.
The Mules will next head down to Middletown Connecticut to face Wesleyan University on Friday.
