Schenectady, New York - A wise man once said don't stand in the way of a charging bull. Tonight, Union College must not have listened or underestimated the danger of a charging mule. Colby Men's Basketball stormed into the Chargers' gym and blew them away, 93-71. A dominant first-half performance gave the Mules their seventh win of the season, taking them to 7-1 overall.
Colby felt generous early on and kept their lead to the single digits. Marcos Montiel and Sam Hinman had eight points to start the game, behind two three-pointers from each guard. With around eight minutes to go, the Mules began to pull away as Jack Lawson grabbed six points in two minutes. But Colby didn't just dominate in the paint but shot over 53% from beyond the arc compared to their opponent's 21%. The Mules shot 8 for 15, the last of the half coming from Max Poulton to take Colby into the break leading 54-30.
The Mules came out with momentum and maintained their lead to start the second half. Although they couldn't get as many three-pointers to fall, they were effective inside the arc. Lawson continued to do as he pleased offensively, but also on the defensive end, grabbing nine rebounds. The senior ended the game with 12 rebounds and 22 points, giving him a well-deserved double-double. Colby also shot a high percentage from the free-throw line, taking advantage of Union's numerous fouls. Dan Civello and Poulton shot 100%, making 5 and 4 respectively, while Hinman buried 6 of his 7 attempts. Defensively, the Mules ended strong, shutting out the Chargers in the last two minutes and getting their 20-point win after a Mitch Humphrey basket in the dying seconds.
Colby is back in action Friday, December 6th, as they travel to Washington University in Saint Louis, Missouri, the #2 ranked team in the nation.
