Mules Drop 100 on Thomas College

Waterville, Maine - The phrase, "big men can't shoot threes" has taunted countless centers on the basketball court. Shaquille O'Neal affirmed this saying as he only made 1 three-pointer in his career, but Colby center Dan Civello isn't O'Neal–he's Dan Civello. The 6'10 Freshman knocked down three shots from beyond the arc en route to a game-high 22 points and the Mules' third win of the season. Colby defeated Thomas College 106-81, taking their record to 3-0 overall.

The Terriers hung around early as they tested Colby's patience offensively. The Mules struggled to get shots to fall, especially from three, and quickly transitioned to finding open layups or jump shots in the paint. Civello dominated inside the arc, showing his versatility by spinning his defender to get to the basket or fading away off his back foot. Max Poulton also stepped up after Colby's struggles, with the offense running through him as he seemed to be all over the floor. Poulton knocked down two three-pointers but also dished out three assists–one of which was to Jack Gatjanis, who converted a three from the corner to give the Mules a late 15-point lead. Thomas had a late surge to end the half and cut their deficit from nineteen down to ten to end the half. Colby led 50-40 heading into the break.

The second half looked almost opposite to the first. Colby shot 62% from three, compared to 29% in the first half, and overall played more composed and took smarter shots. Jack Lawson made his presence known early on as he registered ten points. Lawson used his size to get leverage on defenders down low, drawing fouls and getting sent to the line where he was 4-4 in the second half. Where Lawson was, Civello wasn't. The Freshman stretched the floor and knocked down three triples, at one point extending Colby's lead to 37. In the end, the Mules dominated on both ends of the ball and cruised to an easy victory.

Colby is back in action Friday, November 22, as they head down to Springfield, Massachusetts to take on Ramapo College.
