WORCESTER, Mass. - The Colby Men's Crew team had four boats competing in the Quinsigamond Snake Regatta on Saturday, Oct. 5. One in the Collegiate Men's four event, and three crews in the Collegiate Men's eight event. The day started with some clouds and a sprinkling of rain, but pretty quickly head coach
Stew Stokes mentioned that "the skies parted and we had close to ideal conditions on the water, just a slight headwind today that helped set the crews up."
The Men's four crew rowed by
Nathan Dunn '27; Kevin Huang '28; Augi Booth '28;
Dan Steber '27; and Doug DeNatele '28 finished in tenth with a time of 17:43 over 4,000 meters. Coach Stokes, when speaking of the Men's four crew said they are "a very young boat, but what they lack in experience they make up for in some good grit and were able to beat the Gordon A, Middlebury B, and UNH D boats."
It was a really good showing from all three of the Colby Men's eight crews. The three of them each finished in the top half of the 24-boat field that included two Division I programs who accounted for a quarter of the boats in the field.
Leading the way for the Mules was the Colby A crew rowed by
Alyssa West '25;
Ian Ucko '28;
Cole Christensen '27;
Charlie Anderson '25;
Jackson Harrington '28;
Theo Grossman '27;
Jack Childress '26;
Jed Swan '28; and
Ian Zhou '28. They finished in an impressive sixth place overall covering the 4,000-meter race in a very quick time of 14:22 and only fractions of a second behind the Holy Cross C and WPI A crews. They were the second Division III boat in the event, just shy of a half-second from being the first D3 boat across the line. This impressive first race will fuel the Colby A crew and coaching staff to continue putting in good work as they look forward to The Head of the Charles Regatta in two weeks.
Then the Colby B and C crews came in roughly 3 seconds apart from each other in 11th and 12th places respectively. The Colby B crew was rowed by
Curtis Adams-Beyea '28;
Justin Armata '27;
Danny Sullivan '26;
Andy Li '28;
Nolan Roche '28;
Jack Weinberg '26;
Brendan Barrett '27;
Robbie Trowbridge '28; and Josh Bradshaw '28 and they completed the course in a respectable time of 15:04. The Colby C crew was rowed by
Barlow Herbst '27;
Elliot Do '25;
Sawyer Dillon '28;
Charlie Pantelick '27;
Henry Evans '28;
Theo Ornstein '28; Jack AbuHaidar '27;
Aidan Fowler '27; and
Bennett Jones '27 finished just behind the Colby B crew in 15:07. The coaching staff is thrilled with the depth of the team this year and is excited to see great performances from them today. Having the third eight challenge the second eight while they also had a good performance creates great intra-team competition that will help to drive the program forward.
The Colby Crew team looks forward to their next regatta in two weeks as they travel back to Mass. this time in Cambridge for the Head of the Charles Regatta from Saturday, Oct. 19 - Sunday, Oct. 20.
