Waterville, Maine - The Colby College Men's Soccer team opened the 2023 season with a 4-0 win across town over the Terriers of Thomas College. Colby stars the campaign 1-0 while Thomas falls to 0-2-1.
Playing even for the first 30 minutes,
Mario Simoes put the Mules in front in the 32nd minute, scorching a strike into the lower left corner, giving Colby a one-goal lead into the break. Opening the second half, Simoes netted his second of the night, this time into the upper right corner off a feed from sophomore midfielder
Noah Radecki. First-years
Myles Culley and
Nicholas Donnelly padded the lead with their first collegiate goals at the 58th and 78th minutes, respectively. Junior captain
Brendan McCarthy earned his first shutout of 2023. The netminder also held Thomas scoreless a year ago in the season opener on Mayflower Hill.
Head coach
Ewan Seabrook has been pleased with his team's preparation and performance throughout preseason. "Talent only gets you so far. We will need to be ready to play for each other, cover for each other, as we know that the NESCAC is an unforgiving league. We're taking it one day at a time, but I believe in this group of young men."
Colby enters conference play Saturday when they host Wesleyan at 2:00pm on Serdjenian Field.
