Clinton, NY - The Colby Men's Tennis Team kicked off their spring season on Saturday, March 4th with a thrilling 5-4 win against Hamilton.
The Mules found themselves down 2-1 after doubles. The tandem of junior captain Joey Barrett and freshman Aidan Kwong had a convincing victory at the 3 spot, defeating Hamilton's Matt Bartok and Nicholas Gritz. Senior captain Jan Wenger and sophomore Jake Cohen fell 8-4 at 1st doubles as did junior Sam Henry and sophomore James Bogdanovic at line 2, by a score of 8-5.
Colby looked to turn the score around heading into singles, and they did with wins from Cohen at the 2 spot and senior Ben Powis at the 4 spot by scores of 6-3, 6-4 and 6-4, 6-4 respectively.Â
The final three singles matches began with the match score tied at 3-3. Henry tallied another point for the Mules at line 5, overcoming Hamilton senior Eric Stein 6-2, 7-6(4). Moments later, 6th singles player Kwong was defeated by Hamilton freshman Lorenzo Gunningham 6-4, 6-2 to even the match at 4-4.
The match fell into the hands of Wenger on court 3, who ran away with the second set in a tiebreaker and clinched the match for the Mules with a final score of 5-4.
"It feels really good to start off the season with a win," said Wenger. "I am really proud of how the guys dealt with adversity this early in the season."
The men travel to Amherst tomorrow to continue their spring season.
