Amherst, Mass. - The last time a Colby Men's Ice Hockey team lost to Bowdoin College was during the 2015-16 season. In December of 2018, the Polar Bears came close, delivering the Mules a tie, but yet Colby still owned the series stringing together a 12-game undefeated streak against Bowdoin heading into Saturday's semifinal matchup of the NESCAC tournament. The thing about streaks is the longer it lasts, the harder it is to keep it going. The Polar Bears escaped the grasp of the Mules Saturday, stealing a 3-1 victory to advance to the conference finals.
With three of the top four seeds eliminated last weekend in the quarterfinal round, Colby was one of the favorites remaining. Amherst as the third seed, and highest remaining team, played host for all of the games this weekend.
After a scoreless first period, Colby got on the board first. The Mules peppered the Bowdoin goaltender with 13 shots in the second, and
Carter Breitenfeldt slapped in a Colby rebound to put the Mules in front.
Alex Bourhas and
Ryan Doolin got credit for the assists, and it appeared Colby would continue its dominance of the Polar Bears. Bowdoin was able to tally one of their own before the period ended, sending the rivals into the final period knotted at one.
At the seven-minute mark of the third period, Bowdoin broke the deadlock connecting on a rebound of their own, moving ahead of Colby 2-1. With the Mules emptying the net down the stretch, the Polar Bears added a third goal with a little over one minute remaining, advancing to the conference finals to be played on Sunday against the winner of the Amherst/Williams game.
Colby ends their season 13-11-2, collecting 30 wins in the last two seasons.
