Women's Ice Hockey Achieves Program Record with Double Overtime Victory

Waterville, Maine - The Colby College Women's Ice Hockey team competed against the Trinity College Bantams in the quarterfinals of the NESCAC Playoffs. The 2-1 victory for the Mules in double overtime marked Colby's 17th win this season, breaking a program record.

The first period began with the starting lineup of skaters Klara Jandusikova, Bri Michaud-Nolan, Meg Rittenhouse, McKinley Karpa, Tate Senden, and goalkeeper Mandy Busky. Both teams began with high intensity and goalkeeper Mandy Busky put on the early defensive pressure in a period that mostly stayed in Colby's defensive zone. Mandy Busky had nine saves by the end of the first period keeping the score at 0-0 going into the second period. The second period saw a complete momentum change as the Mules gained control of the puck and outshout the Bantams 17-5. Eight minutes into the third period, Trinity scored their only goal of the matchup to make the score 1-0. However, Colby refused to go down, and only four minutes later Beth Sinson grabbed the puck off the rebound and shot it into the net to even the score at 1-1. The intensity of the game came to a head in the final minute with quick switches between offensive and defensive goals to proceed into overtime.

The game utilized traditional overtime rules with overtime periods of twenty minutes until one team scores a goal. Going into the first overtime, the Mules maintained a crucial high energy on both the offensive and defensive ends. The Mules outshot the Bantams 29-6 with 19-5 on shots on goal. A scoreless first overtime led to a second overtime with two teams determined to advance to the semifinals. At 10:54, Meg Rittenhouse took the power play opportunity and scored her 17th goal for the victory.

Next Saturday, March 4th, the Mules will travel to Amherst College for the remainder of the tournament, facing off against the Hamilton Continentals in the semifinal round of the NESCAC playoffs.
