Box Score Middletown, Conn.- Colby College Women's Ice Hockey competed in the second game of a back-to-back weekend series against the Wesleyan University Cardinals, winning 4-3. The Mules are now 14-6-0 overall and 8-6-0 in NESCAC conference competition.
In a first period dominated offensively by Colby, the Mules had twelve shots on goal in comparison to five shots on goal by the Cardinals, which paid off in a breakaway goal by
Breanna Studley for the early lead. Six minutes into the second period,
Courtney Schumacher made it 2-0 off a deflection from a shot by Bri Michaud Nolan. The scoring continued to go around with forwards
Tate Senden and
Meg Rittenhouse collaborating to take Colby up 3-0 less than halfway through the match. Although goalkeeper
Paige Bolyard stayed strong defensively throughout the game, the Cardinals were able to sneak one in to cut the lead to two going into the third period. Throughout a competitive third period, the Mules and Cardinals exchanged offensive and defensive possesions with Wesleyan cutting the lead to one with six minutes left. However, determined for the NESCAC win, the Mules continued pushing offensively and with only two and a half minutes left
Audrey Shirer hit the back of the net to close out the game and prevent the Wesleyan comeback.
Next Friday, February 11th, Colby College Women's Ice Hockey will return home to compete against the Connecticut College Camels.
