Waterville, Maine - The Colby Women's Basketball team kicked off the 2023-24 season at the Thomas Charlie Ryan Classic over the weekend. In their first matchup taking on UMass Boston Saturday, the Mules grabbed a close 59-56 victory to start the season 1-0 as the Beacons drop to 0-1.
The two teams stayed neck in neck throughout all four quarters trading baskets resulting in 15 total lead changes. Despite UMass Boston taking a seven point lead with four minutes to go in the second, Colby quickly closed the gap going on an eight point run for a 23-22 halftime score. The game came down to the final two minutes of play with
Lydia Mordarski grabbing a crucial offensive rebound and putting it back up for a three point Mule lead. The Beacons answered with a layup of their own but
Chelsea Ibenegbu was able to seal the victory sinking two clutch free throws for the three point win.
Mordarski led the way in the scoring column tallying 14 points followed by
Carter McGloon with 11 and Ibenegbu adding 10. First-year
Kate Olenik had a great debut in her first collegiate outing contributed eight rebounds and nine points.
Colby will be back in action tomorrow taking on SUNY Canton at noon.
