Game Recap: Field Hockey | | Aidan Simmonds

Heartbreaker in Overtime Ends Colby's Season

Lewiston, Maine - Although the scoreline showed a defeat, the Colby College Field Hockey team battled until the end, taking rivals Bates to overtime after overcoming a three goal deficit. The game ended 3-4 after a quick overtime goal from Bates, ending the Mules' season with a record of 4-11 overall and 0-10 in NESCAC conference play.

The first quarter did not bring an ideal start for the Mules, conceding twice in two minutes as Bates had eight shots in Colby's half. The two goal deficit was added onto to start the second quarter as the Bobcats found the back of the net again. The momentum quickly shifted in Colby's favor as Molly Mitchell found Pernilla Shaw for her seventh goal of the season and first of the game. The Mules trailed heading into the break, 1-3.

Coming out of halftime, Colby struck again. A solo goal from Casey Winslow halved their deficit, tallying her seventh of the season. Bates kept the game tense with pressure on Colby's back line, forcing four saves in the quarter from Emily Loeb. The Bobcats continued to test the Mules in the fourth, getting ten shots off while the four that hit the target were are stopped by Loeb. But Colby still needed a goal to draw level. With three minutes left in the game, Charlotte Epker found herself on the left side of the goal, drawing the Bates goalie out of position. A simple pass across the face of the goal only warranted a simple tap in from Shaw to level the score. The joy was short lived though as a quick goal from Bates in overtime ended the game 3-4.

Colby's season wasn't one to look back on in regards to their record, but they continually proved that they could play with the likes of Bowdoin, Amherst, and Bates, all of whom are nationally ranked Division lll teams who made up a very difficult NESCAC conference. Young talent for the Mules in freshman Annie Raynes and McKay Allain, as well as a strong sophomore class with the likes of Catherine McNulty, Lilly Harrington, Molly Mitchell, and Lilly Conway, shows promise for next season and those to come.
