Waterville, Maine - Facing the 2021 NESCAC Champions Williams College on Saturday, the Colby Football team outscored the visitors 10-0 in the second half to secure a 24-14 victory.
Avenging a 42-0 defeat from a year ago at the hands of Williams, the Mules didn't waste much time righting the ship and getting on the board first. After a 52-yard scamper by running back
Keon Smart set up the Mules in the red zone, quarterback
Matt Hersch found
Isaac Anderson for a 19-yard strike. Colby forced Williams to punt on the ensuing drive, giving the ball back to Colby on the Williams half of the field. Executing a 10-play drive that saw the Mules record three first downs, Hersch connected with
Brendan Sawyer for his second touchdown of the game. The Ephs were able to score twice in the second quarter, both on zone read plays kept by quarterback Jack Dickinson. The two foes went into the break knotted at 14.
Colby scored twice in the second half, once by the legs of Hersch (2-yd run) and once by the leg of kicker
Lowell Carr (26-yard field goal). A late Wlliams drive was thwarted late in the third quarter when
Joshua East intercepted Dickinson at midfield, and
Will Nipon made it two on the day by the Colby defense with one minute remaining.
Smart ran for a total of 129 yards on the ground in the game, while Hersch finished the day 14-23 for 177 yards and his two scores. He added 46 yards on the ground. Defensively,
Julian Young led the Mules with 14 tackles, one tackle for loss, and one pass breakup. To go along with his three extra points and successful field goal try, Carr handled the kickoff and punting duties as well, including flipping the field with a 67-yard punt right before halftime, preserving the halftime draw.
Colby is back in action next Saturday when they head to Hartford, Conn. to take on the Trinity Bantams. Trinity defeated Tufts 26-23 in week 1 action.
