Middlebury, VT - The Mules traveled to Middlebury for the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Division III tournament, after progressing through the preliminary round last weekend. The Mules challenged the Middlebury College Panthers on Sunday May 22nd and fell 12-2 in the end after a long and hard fought game. The team has given so much this season and have been consistently playing games since March 5th. After a long and successful season the Mules will hang up their cleats until next spring, when they inevitably make a similar impact in Division III lacrosse. Eleven seniors fill out the roster for the Mules and made the sacrifice to miss their Commencement ceremonies in order to compete in the National Tournament and will celebrate Monday May 23rd on campus they're strong performance in the classroom over the course of the past four years.
The Middlebury defensive unit showed up today and made the Colby attack unable to finish each of their 13 shots on goal. Nine athletes had shots against the Panthers' keeper Annie Enrietto. In the first quarter,
Cami McDonald scored an unassisted goal less than four minutes in. In the fourth quarter, senior
Grace Toner put another goal up on the score board with 11 minutes left. The Mules were unable to get any real offensive play finished due to the aggressive, yet poised, defense from the Middlebury squad. The Colby defense played strong throughout the game, allowing more goals than they've averaged this season, but no more than average for a women's lacrosse game. Senior keeper
Emily Podgorni had seven saves, the team had five caused turnovers, and 18 ground balls.
Back home on Mayflower Hill, the 201st Commencement was taking place. During which, multiple speakers mentioned, with pride, the feats of the Women's Lacrosse seniors and how proud the community is to be represented in the Elite 8 of the NCAA Division III Tournament. Despite the loss they faced on Sunday, the Mules have, no doubt, lived up to their No. 2 ranking for Division III in the country and will continue to make waves in years to come under the direction of Head Coach
Karen Henning and Assistant Coaches
Kelsey Howard and
Paula Habel.
