Hartford, CONN - Colby Baseball took on Middlebury College and Hamilton College in a doubleheader on Saturday, May 14th. The Mules were continuing the double elimination portion of the NESCAC tournament, so if they were to lose both games their season would be over. The first game of the day was against the Panthers. Colby lost in a slug fest, falling 14-16. Thus, they needed a win against Hamilton, who they beat on Friday, to stay alive. However, the Mules weren't able to get it done. They lost to Hamilton 3-11, ending their season.
The Mules kept the first game close. They scored one in the first, one in the third, two in the fourth, two in the fifth, three in the eighth, and five in the ninth. Unfortunately, their offense was simply outpaced.
Elijah Cohen got the start for Colby, pitching five innings and allowing nine runs on seven hits.
John Doyle pitched three and two thirds innings, allowing five earned runs on three hits. Finallu, Moises Celeya pitched the remaining third of an inning, allowing two earned runs on two hits.
Left fielder,
Matthew Panker had the best bat for the Mules in this one, nearly hitting for the cycle. Panker had four hits: two singles; a double; and a triple. He also had four RBIs and two runs of his own.
Clint Flippo also had a great day with three hits and three runs.
Patrick McConnell also had three hits and three RBIs. Finally,
Cole Palmeri had two hits, two runs, two RBIs. His two hits were a double and a homerun.
Since the Mules lost the first game of the day the second put them at risk for elimination. Unfortunately, they weren't able to keep Hamilton's bats in check. Colby lost the second game of the day 3-11 and were sent home from the NESCAC tournament.
Michael Ciaccio got the start and was charged with the loss for the Mules, pitching two innings and allowing three earned runs on five hits.
Charlie Jodka,
Julian Erro,
Mark Sunoo,
Howell Eglin all got time on the mound to finish the season. The only pitcher to not allow a run was Eglin, closing out the last two third innings of the game.
Colby struggled to produce any offense throughout this game, but
Drew Miller did his best to keep the team afloat. Miller had two hits, one of which was a double, and two RBIs.
Patrick McConnell drove in the only other run of the day on his lone hit. Despite the disappointing end to the season, Colby can consider it a success going 24-13 and making a solid run in the NESCAC tournament.
