Mules Advance to Next Round of NCAAs with 20-4 Win Against USMMA

Box Score Waterville, Maine - On the first drizzly day in almost a week, the Mules return to the field for round two of the NCAA Division III tournament.  The Mules challenged the US Merchant Marine Academy at 1:00pm on Sunday May 15th.  USMMA came in from the Skyline Athletic Conference with a record of 14-3 and wins against Manhattanville, Farmingdale State, and Springfield College in tournament play.

Despite a loss in the semifinals against Tufts, the Mules came back strong this weekend to compete in the NCAA Division III tournament hosted at Colby.  Over the course of this week, the Mules have had multiple players be recognized for their skill, hardwork, and stats throughout this season.  Sarah Stark (defense) and Gianna Bruno (attack) earned First-Team honors in the NESCAC, while Elizabeth Hennessey, Eliza Dean (both midfield), Emily Podgorni (keeper), and Annie Eddy (attack) earned Second-Team NESCAC.  In the USA Lacrosse Magazine's All-American selections, Stark earned First-Team, Eddy earned Second-Team, Podgorni earned Third-Team, and Bruno earned an Honorable Mention.  With the recognition of their stellar athleticism, the Mules entered the weekend confident and ready to advance deep into the National Tournament.

During the first half the Mules ran up the score, entering half time 14-0.  Ally Franz and Eddy had four goals apiece for the team and Cami McDonald and Bruno were close behind with three goals each.  Bruno also had five assists to total her points earned today at eight.  Julia Jardina, Ainsley Dion, Grace Toner, Dean, and Gennie Littlejohn each contributed to the Mules' goals for the day.  Colby dominated USMMA with 22 shots on goal compared to their 10.  When it came to the 50/50 opportunities, the Mules won 17 draw controls and 29 ground balls.  Hallie Schwartzman was credited with six draw controls and six ground balls, while Stark had three draw controls and four ground balls.

The Mules will travel to Middlebury Saturday May 21st to play William Smith College at 2:30pm.
