Orono, Maine - The Colby Baseball team is set to travel to Orono on Tuesday to take on Maine's only Division I Baseball team, the Black Bears from the University of Maine. Game time is set for 5:00pm and can be streamed at
americaeast.tv.
Colby enters the game sitting in a tie for first place in the NESCAC - East Division with a 16-6 record. The Mules are fresh off a three-game sweep of Bates, outscoring the Bobcats 29-5 in the set. The Black Bears enter the game just over .500 with a 15-14 record, but their 12-3 record within America East has them sitting atop the conference standings. Outside the conference, UMaine has had victories over powerhouse programs from George Washington, North Dakota State, and the Nittany Lions of Penn State.
Games between the Mules and the Black Bears date back to the time of legendary coach John Winkin. Winkin was at the helm of the Colby Baseball team from 1954 to 1974, accumulating over 300 victories. In 1975 he took on the post at UMaine and proceeded to guide the Black Bears to almost 650 wins in the next 20 years. In his last year leading UMaine, Winkin was looking for midweek games that kept travel at a minimum, and since UMaine served as the only Division I team in Maine, he naturally turned to his familiar stomping grounds and invited the Division III Mules up for a game. The two opponents don't schedule each other every year, but the series has become familiar enough that every Colby player since 1995 can recall at least one matchup with the Black Bears over their four years.
Colby has been defeated in each of the last five contests, but the games have provided plenty of competition. In 2011, Colby fell by only two runs (4-2) and in 2013 the Mules narrowly missed upsetting the juggernaut, jumping out to an 8-1 lead after three innings before eventually succumbing to the Black Bears 9-8.
