Mules Enter NCAA Tournament, First Appearance in Program History

Waterville, Maine - After falling in a tough overtime loss to Amherst in the NESCAC Semifinals, the Colby College Women's Ice Hockey team (16-5-1) had their eyes on the NCAA selection show late Sunday night.  The Mules have been one of the nation's top teams all season long, bouncing between 8, 9, and 10 in the USCHO Coaches Poll.  In the PairWise rankings, Colby has been as high at #4.  Sunday evening, the Mules got their call.

The Colby College Women's Ice Hockey team will take to the road Saturday, March 12 in the quarterfinal round of the NCAA Division III Tournament to face the Cardinals of Plattsburgh St. as one of only two at-large bids to the national tournament.  The appearance will mark the first in program history, as the storied season of the 2021-22 Mules continues.  Just a week ago, Colby set a program mark for wins in a season (16), and days later the Mules were rewarded with four All-NESCAC selections, again a first for the Mules.

Plattsburgh State (24-2-1), which qualified as the automatic qualifier out of the Northeast Women's Hockey League (NEWHL), is making its 17th appearance in the NCAA Tournament. The reigning national champion Cardinals (Plattsburgh St. won the title in 2019, and the 2020 and 2021 NCAA Tournaments were canceled due to COVID-19) topped SUNY Cortland, 4-3, in overtime in the NEWHL championship game on Saturday to earn an automatic bid.

Details regarding ticket information—including prices and method of purchase—will be posted to the WIH SCHEDULE PAGE this upcoming week.

The winner of the game between Plattsburgh and Colby will play one of the tournament's four westernmost teams in the semifinal round on Friday, March 18. The University of Wisconsin-River Falls hosts Aurora College and Gustavus Adolphus College hosts the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire in the first round on Wednesday, March 9, with the winners to meet in the semifinal round on Saturday, March 12. On the other side of the bracket, Middlebury College hosts Endicott College and Nazareth College hosts Elmira College in the other quarterfinal games.
