Franconia, N.H. - The stakes were high for the Colby Alpine Ski Team as they entered the final carnival weekend of the season. The NCAA Eastern Regionals hosted by the University of New Hampshire was inundated with snow. At times it looked like a full-on blizzard was raging at Cannon mountain but, the show goes on and the Mules charged nonetheless.
There was a strong surface present on the hill and although a shelf developed for the later bibs athletes were charging from the back. Some unfortunate DNFs (Did not finish) for the Mules meant that the later athletes were forced to step up. Thankfully, the Mules were still able to score three men and three women.
Leading the pack was Meagan Olsen who skied to 22nd place and 9th for Division three. Three Mules finished within eight-tenths of a second with Charlotte Maurer in 28th, Ella Spear in 31st, and Lydia Riddell in 32nd.
On the men's side of the race no one could catch Jagge Lindstoel of the University of Vermont, he has won eight of the ten carnival races this season and cruised to win by nearly two seconds. Patrick Coughlin was the fastest Mule on the day finishing in 21st and 6th for Division three. Chauncey Morgan notched another top-30, recovering from a difficult first run to slide in at 29th. Louis Weiner, competing in his first carnival provided the third score in 39th place.
On the day the men's team finished in 10th and the women in 7th. The Giant Slalom on Saturday will provide another opportunity and the very last race for the Mules on the bubble to qualify for NCAA championships.
