Hancock, Vt. - The Colby Alpine Ski Team put seven skiers in the Top-30 as personnel bests and good skiing was abound. The second day of The Middlebury Carnival was another GS race and the Mules were able to capitalize on the strong results from the first day with a strong finish.
The track at the Middlebury Snow Bowl is known for its flat start where racers must push hard out of the gate. Any athletes with hopes of challenging the leaders must find the speed incredibly quickly when they push out off the gate. Once the hill rolls over to the first pitch the track is complete with rolls and curves that the racers must negotiate well.
On the men's side it was Patrick Coughlin, leading the team in 18th, his third top-20 GS finish this season. He was followed by Chauncey Morgan and Tucker Strauch who finished right next to each other in 25th and 26th.
A big surprise on the women's side as Molly Mueller rode a blistering fast second run to finish in 5th place. She was the second fastest of division 3 and just three tenths of a second off of the podium. Not only was this her first carnival ever but her result came from well outside the seed from bib 45, making the result that much more impressive.
Also scoring for the women was Lydia Riddell with another strong day in 14th and Ella Spear who's strong second run moved her to 18th. Cassie Lieblein also finished among the top-30 sliding in at 29th and moving up 14 spots on the second run.
The Mules will now get ready for the final carnival of the season next weekend with the University of New Hampshire Carnival at Cannon Mountain and races at Burke Mountain. The races will be the last opportunity for athletes to book a ticket to Park City, Utah for NCAA Championships hosted by the University of Utah.
